Copper Diamond Roofing Shingles on a Bay Area Turret

These are photos of the progress of a very beautiful and unusual project: a copper-roofed turret for a new custom home under construction. The client wanted something spectacular and unusual to finish off his very distinctive new home, and chose the MRN Patagonia Diamond roof shingle in solid copper. The shingles were then individually treated with a special solution to mimic decades of exposure so they'd display that special "patina" that is unique to old copper roofs. We hope the client finishes his job project soon as we're excited to see and photograph the completed turret roof.

Copper Shingles in Napa Valley - From the Customer

From our friends at Varozza Winery: "I would highly recommend Chris. He was professional but even more he was helpful and worked to make it work for us and get us exactly what we wanted. He is now part of our winery family and we look forward to working with him again when we do our home. We also look forward to his coming to all our winery events. He was here to help us bottle our 2007 wine and I look forward to opening some of those bottles over the next twenty years and looking at our beautiful roof and having all of our construction finished and the time to enjoy all our friends and family in our beautiful historic winery."

Many thanks to the beautiful Varozza winery! See the beautiful copper shingles we supplied here.

Reclaimed Copper Shingles in Napa Valley, CA

This picture of a barn in a vineyard illustrates something that I find rather interesting - the rates at which copper changes in different locations.

We were able to get some reclaimed copper shingles from another project for this client, but unfortunately weren't able to get enough to do the entire roof. So, we supplied new, matching shingles of the same size and shape as the old, and that was how the contractor was able to complete the job. What amazes me from viewing the picture (and seeing the finished job) is how well blended the new are with the old. I recall vividly how worried was the client ( and me! ) that the new copper would stick out like a shiny sore thumb for an uncomfortably long time. Now, just a few months after installation, it's not even a concern. There are enough old shingles on this side of the roof, and even though nearly a third of this entire slope is new (and was VERY shiny and new-looking when first installed), it can barely be detected now. Everyone's happy!

I'm sure that in a location that didn't have such a wet winter, or in desert or dry locations it might not have blended as well, but in this case a little patience, and a little effort by the installer to mix some old with some new, made for a beautiful, "aged" copper roof that's as good as new - and good for the next century or more.

Copper Shingles in the Bay Area

Every now and then a project comes along that is so much fun, it's just not like working. This is one of them. The client needed a new roof to replace their 20-year-old wood shingles and wanted something attractive, permanent, lightweight and eco-friendly. After considering a number of the "fake" slates, shingles and other synthetic lightweight entries, they decided that the pictures in the brochures were much nicer than the materials up close, and they didn't want to install something "artificial" on their English Country Estate style home. Coming across our website they decided to investigate metal, and it wasn't long before I was showing them some of my favorite copper profiles.

I was excited to participate in a project like this because an interesting home with a steep roof is always the most desirable canvas for displaying a roof product, and I was so anxious to find such a canvas for a pre-patinated copper product. And now here was the ideal opportunity to show off my creative side! I had the idea in my head for years after a client had sent
me a picture with a similar notion and wanted to know if I could emulate a "distressed" copper roof. That one never happened, but here was the perfect opportunity. My excitement grew when this client decided to go with the copper and loved the idea of the mosaic effect of accelerating the "aging" of the copper before they were installed. As he explained to me, the English Country Manor look was famous for a style of home that might be added to as generations moved in and out of the family estate. That the copper might look slightly different from section to section would play perfectly into this feature of the style. And so we've begun.

I couldn't be more excited about the progress, and will be adding new pics as each section is completed. For more information about this material, visit our site.

Another Great Reason for Copper Roofing

If you’re thinking of upgrading your home or building with a new copper roof, you may be pleased to know that there is yet one more good reason to go ahead with the plan. In addition to being beautiful, permanent, and ecologically responsible, you can now add disease prevention as an attribute of copper roofs! It’s been known for centuries that copper has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties; in fact, it’s not uncommon to see a strip of copper installed across the length of ridge cap on roofs in some areas for the purpose of controlling algae growth on a roof. Now there are a number of studies attempting to quantify the usefulness of copper for a variety of infection deterrent applications. Makes you wonder if a copper roof isn’t the ideal way of preventing nasty bugs from bird droppings on a roof from finding their way into our gardens.

I had one client mention to me that he was considering a copper roof but thought the neighbors might think it a bit ostentatious. Now he can claim that he did it to make his garden a safer place for his grandchildren! Read an article on the subject – and make plans for that copper roof now! You can see all our beautiful profiles in this amazing material here.

Gorgeous Copper and Steel Mansard Roof in Reno, NV

This was a very interesting re-roofing project in which to be involved. The original black-painted wood shingles on this mansard were past their useful lifespan, plus the house was on the edge of a ravine so fire was always a concern. The owners wanted to do something permanent and distinctive with the mansard because it's an extremely prominent architectural element. They chose to have us fabricate new standing seam panels and supply the elegant Harlequin Diamond Roof Shingle in solid copper for the mansard over the front door. We also designed and fabricated the custom copper gutter system for the same area.

The steel standing seam roof panels had to be custom color-matched to the pre-fabricated metal roof edge detail of the new flat roof portion of the project. We were able to manufacture an exact color-matching finish for the new steel roof panels with a full 40-year fade warranty – even for the very dark color required by the owner.

To make for a truly unique and impressive statement, the owners selected a copper roof for the section over their entry – and not just any copper roof. We were able to supply our unique Harlequin Diamond Roof Shingle in solid copper - and in a pattern that echoed the diamond pattern in the beveled glass for the front windows. An unusual roof configuration for the area was made even more special and outstanding with the new copper roof shingles contrasting the dark metal roof panels for the remainder of the mansard.

To finish off the project, we designed a custom gutter system that completely covered the fascia board beneath the copper roof area of the mansard. Using an off-the-shelf gutter system would have made for a rather clumsy-looking assembly, so a custom configuration was decided upon and the result finished off the entire project beautifully.

The result? This distinctive home is now topped with a distinctive metal roof system that will undoubtedly last as long as this home is standing – and provide a beautiful, elegant architectural statement the entire time.

Update: Copper Roof Shingles Top a Winery Barn in St. Helena, Napa Valley

Here's another look at the material we supplied on the historic barn at Varozza Winery in St. Helena.

The client was restoring a civil war era barn that had housed the original wine-making equipment of the family. This particular property had remained in the family for over 100 years, but the barn roof was ready to be replaced. They wanted something more permanent than the through-fastened corrugated panels and composition roof that it had suffered through for the past 20 years or so, but they also wanted to maintain the rustic, historical look. The roof was part of a complete restoration that involved the stone work, the interior, the wine-making equipment, and some structural components.

We were able to source some re-claimed copper roof shingles that were being removed from another building. The resulting completed project met the client’s needs precisely. The roof looks like it was there from the beginning, it will never need replacing, and architecturally its completely consistent with the style and age of the old barn.

It's a truly outstanding and rewarding project, and something of which we’re very proud.

We’ll get some better photographs up in the spring when there is lots of green in the vineyard and on the hills in the background. It should be a cover shot for both Metal Roof Net and the vineyard for a long time to come!
